John Worth McAlister Papers, 1881-1973

John Worth McAlister, born in Asheboro, N.C., educated at the Orange County and Asheville locations of the Bingham School, 1889-1891; the University of North Carolina, 1892-1895; and the Lowell Textile School, 1897-1899; whose career in textile manufacture in Winston-Salem was cut short when he died of appendicitis at the age of 35. Materials relating to John Worth McAlister or to other members of the McAlister family or the family of McAlister's wife, Margaret Hines McAlister. Included is correspondence, 1889-1928, mostly written by John Worth McAlister while he was a student at various schools. These letters are chiefly to his parents and tell of McAlister's activities. There are also a few letters, 1904-1908, that McAlister wrote to his parents or to his wife as he traveled on business, and some, 1919-1928, that relate to the academic career of John Worth McAlister, Jr. Also included are clippings, 1904-1971, describing the activities of John Worth McAlister and members of the McAlister and Hines families, and other papers, 1890-1958, consisting chiefly of school reports. There are also a few photographs, 1904-1961, of McAlister, his parents, and other relatives, including a 1904 snapshot of McAlister and his new bride waving from a train as they departed for their honeymoon trip.
